JAMES : UNRELEASED

The following songs have as yet not been released officially by James in any form, but have been played live or performed on radio sessions.

ALIVE / BROTHER ON A WHEEL - Played on the autumn 1988 tour and then demoed in 1989 mentioned by Saul in the Folklore biography

COME AND GET ME - A track demoed by the band in 1987 when Sire asked them to write something "more commercial".  The band hated it and it never got past the demo stage.

DARK SIDE (aka What Are You Waiting For)

DISCIPLINE - Played on various tours between 1983 and 1986 and also broadcast on James debut Peel Session in 1983

DOUBTS

DRUNKARD - A rather bizarre drinking song, the only recorded version existing from the Leeds Astoria gig in 1985, the opening line of "let's go to the pub and forget all our troubles".

GREGORY’S TOWN - Played on a semi-regular basis between 1986 and 1989 and made appearance in the set as late as 1992. A James favourite, but they never managed to nail down a suitable studio version.

HERE AGAIN - Played in Spring 1987.

I WANT TO BE RAPED BY A WOMAN - A song written by Paul in 1982 which was a regular in the Volume Distortion / Model Team International set until Tim took over lead vocals and refused to sing it.

I’LL CHANGE - Played on the Autumn tour of 1987.

IT’S OVER - Semi-improvised track played at several dates on the European Seven tour in May 1992.

IT’S YOUR LETTERS - Special 20 second track broadcast for Chris Evans’ TFI Friday programme in April 1997 urging viewers to remember their postcode, ole.

LET IT FALL - Semi-improvised track played at least once on the 1990 UK World Cup tour

LOVELY DAY FOR LIFE - Improvisation from a 1983 gig in Liverpool, unclear as to whether this was repeated at later shows

MAYBE - An improvised song played exclusively for an invited audience of about 30 fans at BBC Maida Vale Studios in March 1998.

MELTDOWN JINGLE - Larry, Gavan and Jim recorded this spoken word and piano link for Radio Manchester’s Phil Korbel in 1987.

MIGHT AS WELL BE FRIENDS (aka Sister)

MR EX-PRESIDENT

NEVER FORGET - Another semi-improvised track played at a couple of European festivals in the summer of 1992.

PAPA SAID - A Model Team International track that was a regular in the live sets until 1983 after when it was never to be heard of again.

REDONDO BEACH - On November 24, 1992 James played at Redondo Beach in California and Tim performed an accapella version of the Patti Smith song of the same name. Sadly, no known recording exists of the show.

SCRATCHCARD

SINGING IN THE RAIN - James opened with a singalong of this standard at their headlining performance at the Seattle Endfest on August 6, 1994

SOMEBODY HELP ME - On March 15, 1991 James performed a top secret gig at Paris La Locomotive where they showcased 10 tracks which had been demoed for what later became the Seven LP. Amongst the unique and very different renditions of the album tracks was Somebody Help Me which never made it further than the demo stage.

STOWAWAY (aka Reggae Cowboy)

THROWING IT ALL AWAY - An improvised track played at the end of the Paris Casino show on November 23, 1993, this track metamorphosised into Homeboy and Fishknives four years later.

UPSIDE - Brand new song debuted at the 12 April London Nambucca warm up show.

VIOLENT RAIN - Played live in 1989 on the Come Home tour and in the 1990 Black Session, Violent Rain was an attack on ecological damage in line with Sky Is Falling.

WE HATE IT WHEN OUR FRIENDS BECOME SUCCESSFUL - James stood in for Morrissey at Glastonbury 1992 at the last minute and opened their set with this Morrissey single which it is rumoured (although it has been denied) was written about James and the success of Sit Down.

WE’RE ON FIRE - Played in 1983, this track disappeared quite quickly from the setlist, probably as a result of the opening line "I’d just like to make an announcement, this building is on fire" causing panic.

WILLOW - Another Model Team International track that was a regular in their set through 1982 and 1983, but never saw the light of day - no known copies of it exist apart from probably in Jim and Tim's collections.

WONDERFUL (aka Thrash) - Played during tours in 1985 and 1986, Wonderful is another track lost in the inactivity caused by the delay in releasing Strip-Mine.
